Then you´ve come to the right place. In this article, I will be sharing with you 7 simple tips to take control of your life and start building your dream life, even if you have no idea what that looks like!
Without further introductions, let´s begin!
Tips to take control of your life N1-Brainstorming
The first tip to help you take control of your life is to brainstorm.
It often happens to us that we are so busy focusing on the outside and our environment, that we forget about our inside world, about us, our emotions, our thoughts…
That’s why I want you to take a journal and reflect on how you are feeling. Is there anything you are worried about? Is there something that has been bothering you lately? What things would you like to change/work on this year? What about the things you would like to maintain? Are there any emotions that you have been bottling up inside of you?
Remember not to filter your thoughts and to be honest with yourself!!
Take control of your life by establishing goals
The best way to organize your life is by identifying and establishing your goals. Why?
When we have goals when we have a clear idea of what we are doing, what are we doing it for, and what are we working towards, not only does your life start to acquire meaning, but you start to feel a sense of direction, and clarity in your life.
So to help you establish your goals, first we are going to divide them into two categories- short-term goals and long-term goals.
–Short-term goals: what is something that you want to accomplish in the next months? Are there any skills or abilities that you would like to master, new milestones personally or professionally that you want to accomplish?
–Long-term goals: close your eyes, clear your head of thoughts and visualize your dream self and life in 5 years and think about:
- Where you are? What country do you live in?
- What are is your daily routine?
- What is your job? Do you feel passionate about it?
- What people do you spend your time with?
- What are some of the habits you have? What about your hobbies?
- How do you feel? Are you happy with the future you are imagining, is there something that you would like to change, or improve?
Write down what you see, what you feel, the answer to all the questions. Once you have these written down, transform those dreams and answers into goals.
For example, if one of the things you saw while you were visualizing your dream life is that you lived in an apartment, house, or somewhere different, you would then transform this dream into a goal by writing: “In the spam of X years, I am going to live in…”
Remember to review your objectives regularly to analyze and assess what you are doing, if you are headed in the right direction, and of course to celebrate your wins!

Don’t forget to use the T.A.R.G.E.T. method (which you can find in this article) to set and achieve your goals without dying in the attempt!
Create a road-map to help you take control of your life
Now that you have set your goals and have a clearer idea of what direction you want your life to take it´s time to create a roadmap.
For your goals and dreams to become true you need to create a roadmap/plan of action to accomplish them. Don´t worry this is fairly easier to do.
The first step to creating a roadmap is to choose one of the goals you have established in the previous step and divide this big task into smaller ones, including all the necessary steps you must take to accomplish them.
Once you have this long to-do list, literally schedule them into your calendar or planner. Not only because scheduling this task will make it easier for you to carry them out, but because to-do lists tend to stay on paper.
Little tip– once you have the goals divided into smaller tasks and you have scheduled them, establish 2-5 milestones (depending on how big your goals are) along the way.
What do I mean by milestones? Sometimes we are so focused on the goal and the things we need to do to accomplish it that we even forget why we are putting all of this effort in, why we started in the first place. Or maybe everything becomes about the objective and achieving it and you stop having fun.
Setting milestones, meaning little accomplishment along the path, helps us not only to stay motivated and acknowledge the improvements and wins we are making, but also to remember that not everything is about our goals, but also about enjoying the path, as cheesy as that sounds.
Also, don´t forget to reward and applaud yourself every time you reach one of your milestones!
Let´s see an example to understand this better.
Let´s say that one of your goals, is to be fitter, to move your body more often.
You would now divide this big objective into smaller tasks by establishing that you are going to walk for 30 minutes 4-5 days a week. You also decide to find new and fun ways to move your body, like playing tennis or going on a hike now and then.
The next step would be to schedule in your agenda or planner these smaller tasks. For example by writing every Sunday to decide when and where you will complete your 30-minute walk.
Your milestones for this objective could be something like: “I have been walking for X hours or days!”

Plan a routine for an organized life
Establish a routine for your daily life, one that makes you feel happy and motivated while working on your priorities and towards your dreams.
Don’t forget to set a morning routine. The first hours when we wake up are crucial and will determine the tone for the rest of the day. That’s why it’s important to create a morning routine that makes us feel empowered and productive.
Set out a day at the beginning of the month to sit down and review and reassess your goals. To clear your mind and emotions from previous events that happened during the last month… A moment to reflect on life and to know where you stand in life.
If you are looking for a reset routine at the beginning of the month, I highly recommend you check out this one.
Use Sundays to prepare for your week. What are you planning to do? What are 5 things that you can do this week to bring you a step closer to accomplishing your goals?
You don´t have to plan every minute of your life if you don´t feel comfortable doing it. The objective is to have a clear idea of what is going on in your life.
Here is an example of a Sunday routine to boost your productivity during the week!
Have your priorities of the day clear
One of the smallest, yet most powerful and impactful things I have implemented in my life is writing and establishing my top three priorities of the day.
Just three. Three things or tasks that if you accomplished today, would make the day successful and productive.
Here is a a very powerful excessive you can use every day to help you establish your prioritize:
It basically consists of a chart where you categorize each thing on your to-do list based on its importance and urgency.
Once you finish categorizing every point in your to-do list, you’ll be left with a list of things you should focus you’re attention and energy on.
Tips to take control of your life N6- Taking care of yourself
At the end of the day, it doesn´t matter if you have done all the right steps to plan your week, month, year, or life to be successful.
If you are not happy (with yourself, your life, the environment you live in…), if you don´t take care of your mental and physical health, all that planning is not going to take you very far.
It all starts on the inside, something that we often forget. But something that influences all aspects of our life.
We cannot expect things to be good and successful on the outside if they are not good on the inside.
That is why it is so important to take care of ourselves and our well-being.
Do things that make you happy and bring you joy, learn to establish and respect your boundaries, listen to your body, strive to be better every day, find the things that bring you peace and clarity in your life, and invest in them…
Here are some ideas you can do to take care of your mental and physical wellbeing:
What is on your bucket list?
Create a bucket list of things you want to do this year. Meaning what activities and new experiences do you want to experience? Life is not just about productivity and achievements and work. It´s also about having fun and being happy, about experiencing as many of the beautiful things this world offers as we want.
Think about all the things you want to try this year, get creative, think big, and plan them into your calendar. It is extremely healthy and helpful to have things and plans in your life that motivate you to wake up in the morning and take control of your life.
Create a good vibes list
I want you to create a list of all the things that make you happy and put you in a good mood. This could be certain songs that you like listening to, the food you like, movies, books, a walk through nature, shopping, the hobbies you often do (and the ones you forgot about)…
Recur to this list anytime you don´t feel like you´re yourself, you are in a bad mood, or just as a way to reward yourself.
Habits
Habits are an incredibly big part of our lives. Basically, they are the foundation of our daily life and the secret to our future.
A habit can be defined as a behavior that has been repeated enough times to be performed automatically.
Habits can also be interpreted as the physical manifestation -behavior- of what is inside, of your conscious or unconscious, of your emotional body. Habits flow from what is already inside.
But a habit can also be defined as a solution we use for recurring problems. As we go through life we encounter several problems, some bigger than others. Whenever we come across these problems, our brains start looking for solutions. And as you come across solutions to recurring problems in life, you start to automate those solutions.
Now, there are many different solutions to the same problem. The same way a that a person when comes home can play videogames to relax after work, another person could smoke or go running or painting.
In other words, your original solution, the one that you are used to, may not be the optimal one.
We may have habits in our life that align with the best version of ourselves, while at the same time having habits that have a negative impact on our life.
Because of the great impact that habits have on our lives, it is important to take the time to analyze the ones that rule our life and review how they affect our life.
The next step would be to eliminate the toxic/bad habits and start creating healthy and empowering ones.
