This post is all about the ultimate guide to do your yearly review and prepare for the new year.

Are you looking to do your yearly review and prepare for the next year or even wondering if it really is worth it spending your time on?

Then let me tell you something.

Most of the things that happen in our life aren’t accidental, they are meant to teach us a lesson we need in order to growth and become a better person.

However we are so caught up in our daily life, the problems, the fear, the insecurities, the “what they´ll think about me”, we are so used to seeing the negative that we even forget what life is about.

And the truth is that time is limited and an incredibly precious thing.

But the days start to blurt together, weeks and months start to pass by without even noticing and if we don’t make the conscious effort to be mindful and present we may let life pass us by.

Reflecting on your past including the ups and down is a very powerful mindfulness practice that will help you track your growth, be conscious about your past experiences and most importantly learn from them. But not only that, because reflecting on the past year can actually help you make this new year better.

This exercise is meant to help you consciously reflect on the learnings, the good, the bad, the unexpected as well as prepare you to have the best 2023 you possibly can.

So having said that, prepare a pen and a notebook, and let´s begin:

Create a vision board with your goals and dreams for the year

Vision Boards are a visual tool to help you create and build the life of your dreams. Basically, vision boards consist of a series of images that represent our dreams and goals.

They help us in the process of manifesting and attracting by, when keeping it in a visible place, motivating and reminding us of our objectives and aspirations.

Write your new years resolutions

Nowadays there is a big debate about whether or not you should invest your time in writing your new years resolutions.

I mean whats the point if you never accomplish them any way.

Wrong.

The reason why we rarely ever accomplish our new years resolutions or any goals really  is because we have never been taught how to actually set and accomplish them.

But the truth is that establishing and defining our goals for the year is extremely important, because they bring us a sense of clarity, direction and purpose as well as something to work toward and focus our energy on.

If you haven´t written your new years resolution yet, here I leave you a list of 70 resolution ideas to help you become your best self

Create a personal growth plan

One of the best thing you can do to prepare for the next year is to create a personal growth plan to help you become your best self.

A personal development plan is designed to help you specify exactly what it is you want to change about yourself and how can you achieve just that to become your best self.

This roadmap includes a list of all the changes you want to make in your life as a well as all the actionable steps you need to take in order to achieve this.

But why have a personal development plan? The same reason why we should define our resolutions and goals for the year. Because without a clear direction and action plan you´ll find it´s incredibly difficult to achieve your goals.

Define or revisit your core values

Values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live your life. They are the fundamental beliefs that guide your actions and determine your priorities. Values are the terms with which you determine if your life feels full, abundant, accomplished, and happy.

And inside your values, you have your core value, which are the ones that define your biggest priority in life, the ones that when you say it out loud makes you vibrate with emotion.

What I love the most about core values is that they become this incredibly powerful tool once you discover and understand yours.

They are quite literally a life compass because values are the representation of what truly matters to you in life, about what you stand for, what moves you, and finally what makes you feel happy and fulfilled.

Discovering your core values can also come in handy when establishing and respecting boundaries, as they give you an idea of where is your limit, of what you are willing to withstand while respecting yourself.

Another benefit of discovering your core values is the improvement of your decision-making skills. But how can we use values to make better and wiser decisions?

By for example every time you have to make a decision but you find yourself doubting, you simply have to internally ask: “Does this choice support my values and what I stand for? Does this decision support the essence of my true self?

So now that you know what are values and how powerful they are, you might be wondering how can I discover my values and core values?

You can discover yours by following these 4 simple steps:

1. Write your values

Review the list of examples of core values linked below and select and write down every value that resonates with you as well as the values that most accurately describe your feelings or behaviors. Add any you think of that are not on the list as well.

A little tip that has really helped me in this step and that I highly recommend is to read the words out loud and feel what emotion they evoked in me.

Here is a list of 100 values worth checking out to find out yours!

2. Categorize values into related groups

Now you have a master list of your values, so the next step is to review the list and see if you can group the values into categories. So for example, you may have written down growth, learning, and personal development. These values are all related and could be placed in one category.

3. Identify the central theme of your groups

Once you have categorized your values, choose a word (within that group) that best represents each group. You can leave the other words in the group in parentheses next to the central theme word to give the primary value more context.

So continuing with the example mentioned above, let´s say I have a group of values which are growth, learning, and personal development. And I decide that the one I resonate most with is personal growth.

Then that list would go from- learning, personal development, and growth to “Value: personal development (learning, growth)”.

4. Choose your core values

Now that you have your values chosen and grouped, it´s time to rank the top values in order of importance. While the number of core values people have can vary, try to choose between 3 to 5 core values.

If you have more than 5, ask yourself what values are essential to your life. And remember, in this list, the order has a meaning so make sure to list your values in order from your most meaningful to your least meaningful ones.
